Strengthening Our Foundation: Connecting and Learning to Grow

Behind every seamless event is a passionate operations team that moves with precision, purpose, and an unshakeable commitment to service. This year, our Crystal Signature Events Operations Team stepped away from the fast-paced rhythm of Indianapolis weddings, galas, and corporate celebrations to invest in something equally important—our people.

For four days, our leaders traveled to Lexington, Kentucky for an immersive operations retreat designed to strengthen communication, sharpen leadership skills, and reinforce the culture of excellence that defines Crystal. Clients may know us for our stunning venues, curated menus, and warm hospitality, but it’s our behind-the-scenes teamwork that brings those experiences to life. Retreats like this allow us to pause, realign, and return better equipped to support our clients and each other.

Day One: On the Road and Reconnecting

The retreat began the moment the team gathered at Crane Bay for a carpool caravan south to Kentucky. The drive offered a refreshing change of pace and rare opportunity for the team to unwind and reconnect beyond the excitement of event days.

A lunch stop at Bourbon on Main, a riverside restaurant overlooking the Kentucky River, set the tone for the days ahead. With classic Kentucky fare and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the team was reminded of how much first impressions matter—whether at a restaurant, a wedding, or a black-tie reception.

The group continued on to a private tour at Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of the oldest continually operating distilleries in the country. Beyond its history and craftsmanship, the tour showcased something deeply relevant to our work: the power of storytelling, operational consistency, and pride in tradition. All values we share at Crystal, too.

That evening, the team arrived at a bourbon-themed estate in Nicholasville (complete with room names like “Elijah Craig,” “Blanton’s,” and “The Buffalo Trace”). Dinner, downtime, and a round of Jackbox Games wrapped the evening with laughter and connection. It’s always an important reminder that strong teams begin with strong relationships.

Day Two: Leadership and Culture Development

Day two was dedicated to intentional learning and internal development, as that is work that directly strengthens our clients’ experience.

Topics included:

That evening, the group headed to Lost Palm, a rooftop lounge infused with Art Deco Miami flair. Surrounded by palm trees, soft pastels, and dramatic lighting, the team experienced firsthand how design and ambiance can completely transform a space. After dinner, optional outings included stops at The Burl, The Grove, and District 7 Social, each showcasing unique guest experiences, from arcade nostalgia to elevated cocktails.

Day Three: Peer Learning & Team Bonding

Day three continued with more focused conversations around team-building, communication, and operational refinement. After lunch, the team toured Mane on Main, a Dupree Catering venue perched above downtown Lexington. Observing another hospitality group’s approach provided a valuable perspective on flow, service structure, and venue versatility, reinforcing how thoughtful planning shapes exceptional events.

In the evening, the group attended a private cocktail class at the Constitution Bookstore, honing skills in balance, flavor, and presentation. Just as our culinary and beverage teams aim to craft thoughtful experiences for guests, this hands-on session offered a chance to appreciate the artistry behind every pour.

A pizza night closed out the evening as an easygoing opportunity to unwind, debrief, and strengthen the bonds that carry us through each event season.

Day Four: Inspiration at Keeneland

On the final morning, the team checked out and headed to Keeneland, one of Kentucky’s most storied thoroughbred racetracks. The private behind-the-scenes tour showcased operational excellence on a massive scale, from crowd management to guest arrival experience to the logistics of race-day preparation. For our operations leaders, it was a powerful example of hospitality, coordination, and timing done right.

After one last lunch together, the team made the trip back to Indianapolis fully energized, connected, and ready to bring new ideas to life.
