This summer, our award-winning Crystal Signature Events culinary team took time to step away from our kitchens and invest in something just as important as executing unforgettable events - our people.
Our team traveled north to Chicago, Illinois, for our annual culinary retreat: three days devoted to learning, tasting, and collaboration. The experience wasn’t just about refining recipes, it was about strengthening the skills, creativity, and unity that fuel our reputation for exceptional food, reliability, and hospitality.

Day One: Collaborative Learning and Culinary Growth
We began our retreat with a full day dedicated to growth and collaboration, focusing on three key pillars that guide our culinary mission and uphold our clients’ expectations.
- Recipe Documentation: Consistency is one of the hallmarks of the Crystal experience. We worked to standardize recipes across our operations, fine-tuning details, documenting processes, and ensuring that whether you’re dining at an intimate cocktail reception or a black-tie gala, every dish delivers the same exceptional flavor, presentation, and precision.
- Presentation Elevation: Guests often eat with their eyes first. Our team explored modern plating techniques and current presentation trends, combining clean lines and seasonal textures to create dishes that look as exquisite as they taste. We returned home inspired to implement contemporary, photo-worthy plating that celebrates both artistry and authenticity.
- Culinary Internship Program Development: We also laid the foundation for a new internship initiative, designed to mentor emerging chefs and introduce them to the high standards of Crystal Signature Events. By investing in the next generation of culinary talent, we’re ensuring the future of our kitchens continues to be filled with passion, creativity, and innovation.
The day concluded with lively discussion, recipe brainstorming, and plenty of laughter - a reminder that collaboration is the key ingredient behind every great menu we create.

Day Two: Tasting the City – A Walking Food and Culture Tour
To spark inspiration, we spent our second day exploring the culinary heart of Chicago through a walking food and culture tour. Each stop offered a new perspective on flavor, presentation, and service, each one a reflection of the power of hospitality done well.
- Superior: A refined-yet-approachable restaurant where creativity meets comfort. Its relaxed atmosphere and seamless service reminded us how balance, between elegance and ease, creates a memorable guest experience.
- Lou Malnati’s: Chicago’s deep-dish icon. While Crystal’s catering style leans toward elevated menus, this visit reminded us of the emotional power of nostalgia and comfort food, flavors that can instantly connect guests to a moment or memory.

- Firecakes Donuts: Artisan doughnuts with unexpected combinations like maple bacon and Tahitian vanilla. It was a sweet reminder that even a small bite, executed with care, can become a standout moment, perfect inspiration for our dessert stations and late-night bites.
- Café Crèmerie: Espresso and gelato served with European elegance sparked ideas for interactive coffee and gelato bars, custom experiences that bring energy and refinement to event dining.
- Il Porcellino: A bustling Italian trattoria that blended warmth, precision, and simplicity. The team took note of how hospitality is as much about heart as it is about skill.
Every stop gave us something new to think about, how we can translate the best of Chicago’s flavors, creativity, and hospitality into our own Crystal kitchens.

Michelin Moments: Dining at Elske and Ever
The highlight of our retreat came with two extraordinary fine-dining experiences that reminded us why food is both an art and a craft.
- Elske (1 Michelin Star): Meaning “love” in Danish, Elske captured the essence of understated elegance. The restaurant’s balance of clean flavors, modern design, and seasonal ingredients reflected our own approach to catering - creating experiences that are both refined and heartfelt.
- Ever (2 Michelin Stars): Dining at Ever was nothing short of transformative. Each dish told a story, combining bold creativity with flawless execution. The tasting menu challenged our perspectives on texture, plating, and storytelling through food. We left with a renewed understanding of how cuisine can transcend dining - it can evoke emotion, curiosity, and connection.
Both experiences reminded us that what sets Crystal apart isn’t just the food itself, it’s the passion behind every detail.
